Bafana Bafana winger Elias Mokwana set to leave Esperance

Mokwana secured a sensational move to Tunisia from Sekhukhune United for a reported fee of around R7-million in August, becoming the first-ever South African footballer to move there.

But the honeymoon phase has been disrupted by non-payment in the months that Mokwana has been in North Africa, the public broadcaster has learnt.

The 25-year-old has so far made eight appearances for Esperance and was relishing to feature in both the CAF Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup.

It’s understood Mokwana, who was the subject of serious interest from Kaizer Chiefs before putting pen to paper to join the Tunisian giants, will be a free agent with his contract set to be terminated.

SABC Sport reached out to Mokwana’s attorney Kabelo Mashigo for clarity, and it is clear both parties have reached a deadlock in their negotiations.

“Much of the issues are confidential,” he explained.

“But I can confirm that the club is in breach of the agreement. We provided them with notice to rectify the breach. They have not complied, leaving the player with no option but to accept the repudiation. Elias is focusing on the call-up now and once that is done, we will consider the next step.”

Mokwana is currently in Uganda with the national team ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Kampala and Bafana then fly to Cape Town for another fixture against South Sudan, although a ticket to Morocco next year has already been booked.
