The 48-year-old ex-Orlando Pirates striker, who enjoyed a distinguished career in the German Bundesliga as well as the Danish League with Armenia Bielefeld and Copenhagen respectively, emphasised the impact of playing abroad on Bafana Bafana.
Zuma, speaking to SABC Sport, reminisced about a time when many players in the senior national team sought opportunities overseas, but there seems to be an ongoing trend of local players being content and avoiding the challenge of competing abroad.
"I am genuinely eager to witness an increased presence of South African players competing abroad, akin to individuals such as Themba Zwane and Monnapule Saleng," said 'Rhee'.
"Saleng, in particular, displays promising potential and possesses ample room for growth. I ventured to Europe with the primary aim of self-improvement.
"South Africa harbours immense talent, and it is crucial to have players who are not only skilled but also committed to continuous learning."
Zuma, 48, pointed out that one contributing factor to the complacency of local players is their inclination towards laziness and fear of taking on challenges.
"I believe there are multiple factors at play, and one crucial aspect is scouting. During my time with lower-ranked teams like African Wanderers, we had exceptional scouts, and our top players such as Lucas Radebe and Phill Masinga were making their mark in England," he added.
"Essential to elevating our scouting standards, South Africa still has talent, and we must raise the bar. Our players should aspire to venture into European leagues, despite the challenges of the cold and solitude. It is necessary to step up."
