Barcelona's 'Golden Boy' Lamine Yamal sidelined for a month

Lamine Yamal, Barcelona's teenage sensation and the newly crowned Golden Boy of 2024, will be out of action for approximately three to four weeks due to an ankle injury sustained during a match against Leganes.

The club issued a medical statement on Monday after Yamal underwent tests at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper.

"First team player Lamine Yamal suffered a trauma to his right ankle during yesterday's match against CD Leganes. The tests conducted this morning have revealed a grade 1 injury to the anterior tibiofibular ligament.

"The estimated recovery time is between 3 and 4 weeks," the statement read.

This injury means Yamal will miss crucial upcoming matches including the next La Liga contest against Atletico Madrid, the Copa del Rey clash with Barbastro, and most likely the Spanish Super Cup, scheduled from the 8th to the 12th of January. His recovery will be closely monitored over the coming weeks.

Yamal, who had to be substituted in the 75th minute against Leganes after initially attempting to play through the pain, has been a key figure for Barcelona this season.

His absence was notably felt even at the Golden Boy awards in Turin, where he was a no-show. Instead, he received his accolade before the Leganes game at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys, presenting it to the fans there.

Amidst this setback, there's positive news regarding his future with Barcelona. His agent, Jorge Mendes, confidently stated at the Golden Boy gala, "He's going to renew because Lamine is Barca's."

This comes after reports from MARCA on 16 September, suggesting Barcelona's intent to offer Yamal a 'supercontract' upon turning 18.

Yamal's last contract renewal was just over a year ago on 2 October 2023, but with his rapid rise, it's now outdated. The club plan to enhance his financial terms significantly, laying the groundwork for a long-term commitment.

The new deal is expected to be formalized when he reaches adulthood, securing him at the club until 2030 with terms befitting his burgeoning status in the football world.
