Barcelona secure veteran defender Inigo Martinez until 2026

The experienced defender, who has become a key figure for manager Hansi Flick this season, has agreed to stay until June 2026, adding one more year to his deal. 

Talks between the player and the club had been settled months ago, but the official announcement was delayed until his registration with the Spanish football authorities was finalised.

Martinez, hailing from Ondarroa, was set to see his contract expire this summer. However, a clause in his deal allowed for an automatic one-year extension if he played in 60 percent of Barcelona's matches, with a minimum of 45 minutes required per game to count, regardless of injuries.

The Blaugrana, impressed by his stellar performances, didn't want to wait for that milestone to be hit. They informed him months ago that they intended to keep him, and now the decision has been made public.

The former Real Sociedad man has proven his worth under Flick, racking up 33 appearances this term, 32 of them as a starter. Inigo Martinez has chipped in with three goals and four assists, forming a rock-solid partnership at the heart of the defence alongside young star Pau Cubarsi.

His presence has been vital for a Barcelona side looking to balance youth with experience.

Flick has been full of praise for the veteran. "His performances are brilliant, he's a leader," the Barcelona boss said recently. "We've got a very young squad, so having seasoned players like Inigo is crucial."

Martinez, who realised a lifelong dream when he joined Barcelona as a free agent from Athletic Club in the summer of 2023, is said to be delighted with life under Flick. The centre-back has expressed his joy at extending his stay with the club he's long admired.
