Although he played an essential role in Barcelona's 2-1 El Clasico win over Real Madrid on Sunday, Araujo was seen with an ice pack on his leg after the game.
In spite of scoring an own goal early on, Araujo delivered a crucial performance for Xavi's side, even though he struggled in the final stages of the game. The Uruguay FA tweeted that Araujo's injury would prevent him from participating in their upcoming matches, and Sebastian Caceres has been called up instead.
Barcelona released an update on Araujo's situation, stating that he would undergo further medical tests before a decision could be made regarding his fitness. Unfortunately, the prognosis for Araujo is negative in the short term, and he will continue his recovery in Spain, which is expected to take around ten days.
Uruguay are set to play friendly games against Japan and South Korea in Asia, and Araujo's absence is a setback for the team. The injury also adds to the club vs country debate regarding Araujo's participation, which has been a source of controversy in the past, including his World Cup call-up.
