Bayer Leverkusen in talks with Florian Wirtz over contract

Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz is reportedly in discussions to extend his current contract, which expires in 2027.

The potential extension would add one year, tying the German international to the club until 2028.

However, the structure of the deal suggests Wirtz could be allowed to leave as early as 2026.

Despite speculation linking the 20-year-old midfielder with a move to Bayern Munich, the Bavarian giants are considered unlikely suitors due to financial constraints.

With an estimated transfer fee of 150 million euro and an annual salary of 20 million euro, the move would stretch Bayern's budget.

"Bayer 04 have had a very trusting and close relationship with Florian Wirtz and his family for years," a club statement read.

"Contractual matters are discussed exclusively between the Bayer 04 management and the Wirtz family. If anything changes in the current contractual situation, Bayer 04 will of course communicate that in agreement with the Wirtz family.

"We ask for your understanding that we will not comment further on this topic."

Conflicting reports have surfaced regarding Wirtz's future, with some sources claiming the contract extension has already been finalised, while others state negotiations are ongoing.

Regardless, Bayer Leverkusen are confident of retaining Wirtz's services, with his role at the BayArena seen as pivotal even if head coach Xabi Alonso departs.

Wirtz, who hails from Pulheim, Germany, has emerged as one of Europe's brightest young talents.

His performances have solidified his status as a key figure at Leverkusen, and the club is keen to build its future around him.
