The Bayern mentor coached Tau in Belgium, while still with Pro League side RSC Anderlecht, before the 30-year-old moved on to Brighton.
Answering a question from SABC Sport in a press conference after their 2-1 loss to FSV Mainz 05 at the Mewa Arena in Germany, Kompany says, as coaches they care about what happens to their former players.
"I think my colleague will be able to understand when I'm saying, we always keep a bond with our players, and Percy Tau, of course, I understood already when I was coaching him, how big of a star he was in South Africa, so I understand for you it's an important question," said Kompany.
"But all I can say is [that] I hope he does well in the next few years, and he did really well for me, so I wish him the best, and for today I don't think I can say much more."
Meanwhile, Kompany said they are still assessing star forward Harry Kane, who has scored 20 goals in 19 appearances this season, following a thigh injury picked up against Borussia Dortmund last month.
"I think Harry is doing well, he was touch-and-go for this game, so hopefully he can be there for the next game [against RB Leipzig on Friday]."
The Bundesliga will go on a festive season recess following this weekend's action, with SABC Sport to bring you the action from Bayer Leverkusen vs Freiburg on Saturday evening (19:30) LIVE on SABC Sport Channel on DTT and SABC +.
