Germany and Bayern captain Neuer broke his leg while skiing during 'extra vacation' time allocated after his nation's World Cup elimination and will be out of action for the rest of the Bundesliga season.
"I don't like to talk about players of other clubs, but it's definitely a topic, of course," Salihamidzic told Sky Germany.
"We are considering our options and will make a decision in the near future," he added.
According to some media reports, Sommer has already agreed personal terms with Bayern.
Former Bayern and Germany midfielder Lothar Matthaus recently said that he sees the 34-year-old Sommer as the perfect candidate right now to join the Bundesliga Giants because he ticks all of the right boxes.
"Bayern have a great keeper in Sommer who doesn't make a fuss in the summer when Neuer returns. It seems to me to be a very good transfer for all parties," Matthaus wrote in a column for Sky Sports.
Matthaus added that a move for the Swiss keeper "makes the most sense" for Bayern.
Another player linked with the position is Eintracht Frankfurt's Kevin Trapp, if the Sommer deal does not happen, but Matthaus feels it's something less feasible for all parties involved.
"On the one hand, he still has a contract until 2024, Frankfurt is playing against Naples in the Champions League and they are up there in the championship," he pointed out.
Matthaus added that 32-year-old Trapp already has an important role at Frankfurt, which could warrant Hansi Flick choosing to make him the number one keeper for Die Mannschaft.
Unlike the presumed understanding from Sommer's perspective of stepping down when Neuer eventually returns from injury, it's unlikely that Trapp will want to make way as easily when the first choice Bayern keeper returns, without a fight.
"And if you imagine a fight for Bayern's goal next summer between the two international goalkeepers, then that will above all cause unrest.
"And Bayern certainly don't need that. I'm clearly in favour of the solution with Yann Sommer," Matthaus stressed.
