Betway Premiership: Stellenbosch held at home by Richards Bay

Stellenbosch converted a late penalty as they were held to a 1-1 draw against Richards Bay in their Betway Premiership clash at the Danie Craven Stadium.

Thato Mohlamme had given the visitors an early lead but Fawaaz Basadien held his nerve from the penalty spot to ensure Stellies took a point from the contest.

The hosts came into the encounter knowing a victory could lift them up to fifth in the standings but they fell behind in the second minute when Mohlamme slotted in a rebound from close-range after Justice Figuareido's free-kick was parried by goalkeeper Sage Stephens.

Stellies then settled into the game after the shock of going behind so early, and carved out a few goal-scoring opportunities with Devin Titus going closest with a header.

Richards Bay took their advantage into the halftime break and home coach Steve Barker responded with a triple substitution at the interval, bringing on Andre De Jong, Lesiba Nku and Langelihle Phili.

The visitors though should have mad it 2-0 when Mohlamme was clean through on goal but the attacking midfielder fired his effort straight at Stephens.

Richards Bay shot-stopper Salim Mogoola then produced a superb save to deny Phili while De Jong hit the post from the rebound.

The home side's pressure eventually paid off with 13 minutes remaining when Nku was fouled in the box by Keegan Allen and Basadien stepped up and made not mistake from the spot to draw the teams level.    Neither side was able to find a winner in the final stages and had to settle for a point apiece.
