SABC Sport can reveal the two parties have reached an unprecedented agreement that would see a player move between the two Soweto giants should he pass a medical and have the finer details ironed out.
If all goes well, as expected, Sam would then be part of The Glamour Boys’ pre-season training camp in Turkey from Friday.
The information gathered by the public broadcaster suggests it took a lot of discreet talks behind the scenes for Pirates to entertain the idea that one of their players could be crossing over to their archrivals at Naturena.
But once the best interest of the player was taken into consideration it is believed the Pirates hierarchy felt no need to stand in the way of Sam starting afresh and moving over to Chiefs, who are set to unveil a new coach in Nasreddine Nabi.
It’s been a challenging few months for the left back having spent the previous six months without kicking a ball after the saga that unfolded at Moroka Swallows, where he’d been sent out on loan by his parent club.
With The Dube Birds battling financial woes, Sam became one of the causalities and was unfortunate to spend the rest of the second half of the 2023/24 season unable to do what he loves – play football.
However, as a player that was still contracted to Pirates the former Bloemfontein Celtic defender and junior international was due to return back to be assessed by coach Jose Riveiro before being given the greenlight to talk to Chiefs.
It’s now set to only be a formality that a move will be concluded as Nabi is set to lead what Amakhosi hope to be a revolution when he officially takes charge.
Chiefs also releasing veteran left back Sifiso Hlanti meant that they would need to go into the market to sign a replacement, and SABC Sport has established that the incoming coach and his technical team were on board with Sam joining the club.
