Zungu joined AmaZulu as a free agent about two weeks ago, and he’s been working on his fitness levels since then.
Speaking just before his first training session in 2025, in Durban yesterday, the former Amiens and Glasgow Rangers player is looking forward to his first game with Usuthu.
"Yeah, first I'm very happy to be here and I'm happy that God gave me an opportunity to showcase my talent more especially to the team. Obviously, that's how football players should thank the president and coaches when you do play,” Zungu said.
“So, yeah, I'm very happy to be here and yeah, according to what I know, I am available for selection this weekend and I'm looking forward to it.”
Zungu last played a competitive game at Mamelodi Sundowns, which was the last league game of the season in May. He played a total of 30 matches last season for Sundowns in all competitions.
AmaZulu co-coach Vusumuzi “Kanu” Vilakazi says Zungu and the club’s other new signee, Sandile Mthethwa, who also arrives on a free from Orlando Pirates, with their wealth of experience, will offer more to the club.
"They are not only coming to have an impact in playing but also to make sure that we have a lot of youngsters from the DDC who are playing similar positions as them. I was very much happy, just before we left in our last training session, I saw Zungu talking to three boys from the juniors and coaching them or just advising them and I was very happy. So, that's the contribution that we expect from an experienced player like him," Vilakazi said.
Zungu has played in the AFCON, CAF Champions League, French Ligue 1, Portuguese Primeira Liga, and Scottish Premier League. The 32-year-old also enjoys being a big brother to the club's youngsters.
"Yes, obviously, I can't have so much experience and played for over a decade and been around the world and I do share or try to help the young ones. Maybe go do the same or even be better or achieve more than I've achieved,” Zungu added.
“So, yeah, I try my best and it's in me and I love the game, I love football. I'm here and if I help, I'm sure on the pitch, we can do great things this season."
