Bongani Zungu: Why it did not work out at Mamelodi Sundowns

AmaZulu FC new signing Bongani Zungu has opened up on the struggles that led to his early departure from Mamelodi Sundowns, and why it has taken time for him to decide on his next move.

The midfielder was announced by AmaZulu on Tuesday, joining the KwaZulu-Natal side as a free agent following his departure at Chloorkop six months ago.

Addressing media on Friday, the former Bafana Bafana anchorman, who also spent some time with Scotland giants Rangers FC after his stint in France, revealed what led to his struggles in his second stint with The Brazilians.

"When I returned to Mamelodi Sundowns, I was so excited, I was happy. However, there were lot of things that were happening. Mentally I was not happy, I could say a lot," Zungu revealed.

“I think the timing was not okay for me, I was not really happy with myself as a human being, [after] a lot had happened."

'Ben 10' leaving the defending champions came as huge surprise, as he shared why he chose Usuthu over other teams that were also pursuing him.

"I chose to come here because I was chasing happiness, I had to take a break to work on myself, to deal with my mental health," he explained.

"I think moving to AmaZulu will help me a lot – the president Sandile Zungu spoke to me and sold his philosophy, which made it easy for me to not take up other offers abroad and locally."

The 32-year-old has set his mind on finishing his career on a high note, promising to reward AmaZulu for giving him another chance to revive his career and love for the game.

“I want to work hard and revive the old 'Ben 10', I want to help the club achieve their objectives this season," he concluded.
