The victory snapped a three-match winless streak for Gavin Hunt's charges and elevated the Tshwane outfit up to seventh in the league standings.
It was the home team that made the stronger start to the contest and they were awarded a penalty after Pogiso Sanoka was adjudged to have fouled Yanela Mbuthuma.
Nkosikhona Ndaba took responsibility from the spot but saw his tame effort easily stopped by visiting goalkeeper Thakasani Mbanjwa.
The first half produced minimal goal-scoring threat but SuperSport almost took the lead into the interval when Vincent Pule's low shot was cleared on the goal-line by defender Keegan Allan.
The second half followed the same pattern as both teams struggled to create any meaningful attempts at goal as play broke down in the final third.
Hunt then turned to his bench and decided to introduce midfielder Brooklyn Poggenpoel and Grobler with 15 minutes of the contest still remaining.
The move turned out to be a masterstroke as it was Grobler who grabbed the winner in the 89th minute, the forward finishing from close-range following a scramble in the box.
The defeat means Richards Bay have now not tasted victory in five matches across competitions and remain at the bottom of the standings having only collected five points from 10 matches.
