Breaking: Royal AM matches postponed indefinitely

SABC Sport has established that Royal AM matches will not go ahead, despite assurances from the club’s general manager Richard Makhoba.

This immediately affects the Betway Premiership fixture scheduled at Harry Gwala Stadium against Orlando Pirates on Thursday night – a clash Makhoba was adamant would go ahead.

Information reaching the public broadcaster is that the Premier Soccer League wants guarantees the takeover by a curator appointed by the South African Revenue Services would not completely distablise the team, but that had not yet been established by this afternoon.

Club president Shauwn Mkhize’s houses in Durban were raided and luxury cars seized last year, as SARS attempted to recoup a R40-million tax debt.

Royal AM delayed paying salaries for November as well as December, and as a result could not travel to Gqeberha to play Chippa United two weeks ago.

Makhoba explained to SABC Sport on Tuesday that 37 players were registered and confirmed their readiness to host The Buccaneers.

However, it has since emerged that the League has moved swiftly to call off all of the club's matches, including their Nedbank Cup clash against Milford FC on Monday.

The situation isn’t likely to change, but, as things stand, Royal AM, who are still banned by FIFA from signing players until they settle the R15-million owed to striker Samir Nurkovic, will not be in action any time soon.

The PSL also took the decision to suspend their DStv Diski Challenge team back in October as the club did not have enough players.
