FSV Mainz 05 aim to strengthen South Africa relationships

FSV Mainz 05 sporting director Niko Bungert says they are excited to have given two young South African football players an opportunity as mascots in the Bundesliga.

Shaka Xulu and Vini Ferreira, currently with the South African football organisation The Football Union on a German Tour, had the opportunity of a life-time as they walked out alongside Mainz first team stars in front of a sold out Mewa Arena against Bayern Munich.

Bungert says they are proud to strengthen their relationships within the South African football market.

“I think we have a pretty special way of educating the kids, the style of play and developing them from the academy to our first team," said the former Mainz defender.

"We are very happy creating opportunities for South Africans who are interest in our development strategy."

The Bundesliga will go on a festive season break after this weekend's action, with SABC Sport to bring you the action from Bayer Leverkusen vs Freiburg on Saturday evening (19:30) LIVE on SABC Sport Channel on DTT and SABC +.

Bungert says they are honoured to have South Africans enjoying German football on their free-to-air channels like the SABC.

“We are happy about everyone, every country that enjoys the Bundesliga, especially when it’s Mainz, our small village in the middle of Germany to watch our games.

"We are proud and we are also happy that South Africans get to watch our games," he concluded.
