Speaking to the media at the PSL offices yesterday, Mthombeni was responding to questions about the video that went viral on social media with players from Casric Stars celebrating after they were drawn against Chiefs. He says that celebration was directed at him.
"To be quite honest, I'm a die-hard Kaizer Chiefs fan, the boys were waiting for this. After the draw, everyone was asking me which colour I'm going to wear. I said they must stop asking me that question because I'm a Casric Stars coach, they also wanted to see my behaviour. That's why the boys were celebrating like that, it's more like a child playing against their father, who's going to win?" he said.
Mthombeni says during the early 2000’s he would commute between Mpumalanga and Gauteng to come watch his beloved Amakhosi. And the man who will be sitting opposite him in the dugout on Sunday, Arthur “10111” Zwane was one of his heroes on the pitch.
"During Arthur Zwane and Jabu Pule's playing days, I was always driving from Mpumalanga to come and watch Kaizer Chiefs. I think that was the main thing. I don't want people thinking that Chiefs is an easy team. Chiefs is a big team and the players want to see the coach playing against his favourite team," he concluded.
