Prior to the news, the former Brighton and Hove Albion coach had told journalists he was ready to take responsibility for how things have unfolded in Cote d’Ivoire, where the continental competition is being staged.
''If you're asking me about myself personally, then as head coach I have not done well enough in this competition. We have played three games, as I have said - we have conceded 2 goals in each of these games and we had to put ourselves in a winning position where we could score goals. So if you're asking me about my performance, I take responsibility for this team'', said Hughton.
Ghana had been hoping to progress to the round of 16 as one of the best third-placed teams despite only managing two points in a group that was eventually won by Cape Verde, with Egypt finishing as runners up.
The former coach says it wasn’t for the lack of trying.
''I have a group of players that came here wanting to do well, wanted to compete really well. For the results we have had in these three games, I am the coach and I will take responsibility,'' added Hughton.
Hughton took over as Ghana coach almost a year ago after serving as an advisor, but the general feeling in the country is that the team regressed under his guidance.
''The impact can only be judged by results, so I think what you have to do as journalists, you will analyse and you will analyse the results from myself as head coach,'' he concluded.
In his own evaluation, the former Brighton and Hove Albion coach concludes that The Black Stars were below par at AFCON.
