Confirmed: Brandon Truter leaves Richards Bay

Richards Bay chairman Jomo Biyela has told SABC Sport that the club and coach Brandon Truter have parted ways.

This comes on the back of the Natal Rich Boys losing 2-1 to Kaizer Chiefs in the Betway Premiership on Wednesday night at the Peter Mokaba Stadium despite the visitors having a numerical advantage.

Chiefs had defender Reeve Frosler sent off early in the second half, but still went on to win the league clash.

Richards Bay are now third from bottom of the log after eight fixtures, with just one win that Biyela felt did not meet the “performance requirements”.

“We did not fire the coach, however for our sanity it was best that we go our separate ways with our integrity intact. The coach did not meet the performance requirements for the season,” the chairman explained.

Truter arrived to take over from Vusumuzi Vilakazi in September with expectations to aim for a top four finish on the back of Phakwe Gas coming on board as a sponsor to the tune of R60-million for three years – added to that was another R40-million for community upliftment.

As a partner, Phakwe Gas had made it clear the club would prefer a high-profile coach even while Vilakazi was still in the job.

Truter reached the semi-finals of the Carling Knockout and was reportedly sacked after losing to Magesi FC, but Biyela denied this.

However, on Thursday morning he confirmed assistant coach Ronnie Gabriel and Sboniso Gumede will be on the bench against AmaZulu on Saturday in what is probably now a must win game for Richards Bay.
