Current Kaizer Chiefs squad aim to restore glory days

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma says the current squad wants to be remembered as the generation that turned things around in difficult times.

This year the club is celebrating its 55th birthday, as the 7th of January marks the day the club chairman Kaizer Motaung, together with his friends and former teammates broke away from Orlando Pirates and formed Kaizer XI, which was later renamed Kaizer Chiefs in 1970.

Nicknamed Amakhosi, the club went on to dominate South African football, but in the last decade they have been a shadow of its former self.

Something Bvuma says they want to rectify.

"It's very important for us to be remembered as a generation that changed the whole situation. I'm not gonna think about the negatives of 'I don't wanna be remembered' or as a generation that didn't achieve A, B, C but we have a chance as a team to change all of that,” Bvuma said.

“We have a chance to change this whole situation of being remembered as that group that changed the whole situation. I'm grateful that I'm still here and I believe with the quality players that we have, with the coaching staff that we have, we can easily turn things around and everything can work for us."

To mark their 55th birthday, Chiefs host Stellenbosch FC this evening, in what will only be their second game at FNB stadium this season, having played some of their home matches in Durban and Polokwane, due to the unavailability of the Calabash.

Bvuma, who came up through the Chiefs development structures, says this is an important game for them to turn the tide.

"Playing Stellenbosch, yes, we didn't start the year well, we lost in Cape Town but we are looking forward to the game. It's out third game at home, here at FNB Stadium, we are looking forward to it,” he added.

“Obviously, the coaches and the whole team, we know what's at stake, we know that we have to work hard in order for us to win the game. So, we definitely going to give our all and win the game tomorrow."
