With several players returning late from international duty, including Giuliano Simeone, Rodrigo De Paul, and Jose Maria Gimenez, the 20-year-old Barrios has emerged as a central figure in Simeone's plans.
Barrios, recently called up to the Spanish national team for the first time, has swiftly become an essential part of Atletico's midfield setup.
During recent training sessions, the versatile midfielder has showcased his adaptability in two key formations. In a 5-3-2 system, Barrios featured on the right of a midfield trio alongside captain Koke and Samuel Lino.
In a 4-4-2 shape, he operated in a deeper, central pairing with Conor Gallagher. His tactical awareness and energy caught Simeone's eye, solidifying his role in both setups.
Striker Alexander Sorloth also looks set to play a prominent role, likely partnering Antoine Griezmann in a 4-4-2 lineup.
Angel Correa remains a strong option for the more defensive 5-3-2 formation. Meanwhile, veteran defender Robin Le Normand participated in group training before resuming individual work.
Two possible lineups have emerged from the week's preparations. The defensive 5-3-2 formation includes Jan Oblak in goal, supported by a back five of Javi Galan, Marcos Llorente, Cesar Azpilicueta, Axel Witsel, and Clement Lenglet. The midfield trio consists of Koke, Barrios, and Lino, with Griezmann and Correa up front.
The more attacking 4-4-2 setup adds Rodrigo Riquelme to the midfield, while Sorloth partnered Griezmann.
Simeone's reliance on Barrios reflects his belief in the youngster's ability to influence games. As Atletico aimed to secure three points, all eyes were on Barrios to deliver another strong performance and cement his growing reputation.
