Disciples of Madagascar are not a closed book to Orlando Pirates

The good news for Orlando Pirates, as they head to their opening preliminary round, first-leg fixture against Malagasy’s Disciples in Saint Pierre, Mauritius, tomorrow, is that the opponent will not be a closed book to them.

Pirates coach Jose Riveiro confirmed this to SABC Sport earlier this week as they continued their preparations.

The CAF Inter-Club preliminary stages are usually characterized by a lack of information, footage of the opponents, and some shenanigans off the pitch, but Riveiro says they have prepared accordingly this time around.

"It's a challenge but I think we did a good job, one more time. Every department is really involved in this game and we know and we have enough information about the opponent to face the game and we know about the place where we are going to play, the facilities, the type of grass, all the obstacles that we will find this time to go through to the next round but lack of information is not an issue in this occasion," Riveiro said.

Pirates are competing in five competitions this season, including the Champions League. They last reached a continental cup final in 2022, when they lost one penalty to RS Berkane. Riveirio makes it known that they are prioritizing all the cup competitions.

"Win each and every game, that's our obligation in Orlando Pirates. We are going to every competition with the intention to play the final games for each and every game, every three points, every trophy and that's the ambition of the club and we are here to represent the club so there are no minor trophies in our agenda," the coach explained.

Last season, Pirates failed to reach the lucrative group stages as they were knocked out by Botswana champions Jwaneng Galaxy, a team they could still possibly meet in the next round.

Riveiro says they plan to finish the tie as a contest against Disciples in Mauritius tomorrow, ahead of the return leg at Orlando Stadium next Friday.

"We want to win the match, that's all then let's see how the game is presented to us, the opportunities that we will have, the resistance of the opponent but our intention is always the same in each and every game, we wanna go there to play good football, to get a good result.”
