DStv Premiership: Stellenbosch and Cape Town City earn hard-fought wins

Stellenbosch continue resurgence with victory at Richards Bay

Stellenbosch clipped high-flying Richards Bay's wings as they came away with a 2-1 victory at the King Zwelithini Stadium.

The win is the Cape outfit's third on the trot, and Steve Barker's side now lie in ninth place after finding themselves stuck in the relegation zone as recently as January following a 4-1 defeat to Orlando Pirates.

For Richards Bay, it marks their third straight defeat, leaving them stuck in fourth place with Kaizer Chiefs breathing down their necks.

After an evenly contested first half, Stellenbosch broke the deadlock five minutes before the break thanks to a smart finish from Iqraam Rayners, who continued his impressive recent goal-scoring form.

Seven minutes into the second half, the Maroons doubled their lead Rayners latched on to Junior Mendieta's pass and bagged his brace for his fifth goal in three games.

Richards Bay pulled one back eight minutes from time after Luvuyo Memela stepped up and smashed home a penalty following a Stellenbosch foul in the box, but the visitors were able to hold on for another fine victory.

Citizens come away with win at Sekhukhune

Cape Town City picked up their second win on the trot as they earned a 1-0 away victory at Sekhukhune United.

The back-to-back wins have lifted the Citizens from 12th on the DSTV Premiership log two weeks ago all the way up to sixth, two points ahead of Sekhukhune who drop down to seventh.

City started the match in blistering fashion with chances falling to Darwin Gonzalez and Brice Ambina, although the hosts grew in the game as the first half wore on and should have been ahead just before the break when only a great save from Darren Keet kept Given Mashikinya's parried shot out of goal.

That save would prove all too valuable when the match was ultimately decided by Thabo Nodada's 62nd-minute strike after he got the assist from Gonzalez, handing City a lead they would not relinquish.

AmaZulu score late to salvage point against Royal AM

In KwaZulu-Natal, AmaZulu needed a late equaliser from Bongi Ntuli to secure a point against visitors Royal AM.

The away side took the lead seven minutes into the second half when Ruzaigh Gamildien found the back of the hosts' net.

However, Ntuli levelled matters in the 87th minute to earn a point for Usuthu, leaving them 11th on the standings while Royal are one point better off in 10th.
