Ex-Mali defender Samba Diawara named Stade de Reims head coach

French Ligue 1 club Stade de Reims has officially appointed Samba Diawara as their new head coach following the departure of Luka Elsner earlier this month.

Diawara, a former Mali international, was previously an assistant coach at Reims and has now stepped up to lead the first team. His appointment was confirmed on Thursday, just ahead of the club's crucial league clash with Stade Rennes.

Reims' general director, Mathieu Lacour, confirmed Diawara's appointment but did not disclose the specifics of his contract. However, he made it clear that Diawara is not just an interim solution but a long-term managerial choice for the club.

"Our discussions on Monday and Tuesday began with a very clear understanding from both sides: to initiate a long-term collaboration with him leading the first team," Lacour was quoted by Footboom1.com.

"When I refer to the long term, I mean that this is not an interim position until the season ends. Samba will be the head coach with a vision for a long-term partnership."

The 46-year-old takes over at a challenging time for Reims, who are currently winless in their last 11 matches. The poor run has left them in 14th place in Ligue 1 with 22 points, just four points above the relegation zone, where Saint-Étienne sits.

Diawara's first test as head coach will be tonight's clash against Stade Rennes, where he will look to inspire a much-needed turnaround for the struggling club.
