The Buccaneers announced on Friday that the 27-year-old would be parting company with the club and effectively becoming a free agent, while winger Katlego Otladisa moves across to Sekhukhune United on loan.
Mthethwa initially joined Pirates from the KZN Academy in 2016 and had been sent on various loan spells to Richards Bay as well as Chippa United to get regular minutes before establishing himself at the Soweto outfit.
While he’d managed a combined 12 matches in coach Jose Riveiro’s first season during the 2022/23 campaign, Mthethwa’s minutes had dwindled as he fell down the pecking order of centre backs.
This season, following the emergence of Thabiso Sesane, the player was yet to make an appearance prior to the announcement that he was leaving.
According to the information gathered by the public broadcaster, with Mthethwa’s agent Basia Michaels spotted in Durban earlier in the week as the player bid farewell to his teammates – his departure to the coast was imminent.
It’s understood Usuthu are now firm favourites to secure Mthethwa to beef up coach Arthur Zwane and Vusumuzi Vilakazi’s team going into the second round of the campaign and pushing for a top four finish.
Mthethwa is then set to join AmaZulu when the registration window opens as of 1 January in the new year.
