Exclusive: Mamelodi Sundowns set to make audacious bid for Tashreeq Matthews

Recent news in Europe had linked South African winger Tashreeq Matthews with a possible move to Scottish giants Rangers, but SABC Sport can exclusively reveal that it’s Mamelodi Sundowns who’ve shown serious interest.

The public broadcaster has established through impeccable sources both locally and abroad the reigning DStv Premiership title holders are contemplating an audacious bid for the 23-year-old.

Matthews, who rose to prominence when he signed for Borussia Dortmund in Germany after he’d just turned 18, is currently one of the best players in the Swedish topflight where he plays for IK Sirius.

He caught the attention of rival clubs again last season when he ended the campaign with 11 goals and 10 assists from 33 matches in all competitions as a wide player, but surprisingly did not rush for a transfer – partly due to still being contracted on a long term deal that would have required a fee.

According to reports in Scotland, coach Phillipe Clement has cooled down any speculation of signing Matthews during the current transfer window.

But prominent insiders with knowledge of movements in the market have indicated that Sundowns are huge admirers of the player and are indeed considering bringing him on board – if possible – this month.

Matthews was one of the players earmarked by many as a perhaps one of the young players to be included by coach Hugo Broos in Bafana Bafana’s squad for the Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire at the moment.

However, that hope faded when the Belgian mentor named his final 50-man preliminary team and the talented Matthews had not been picked.

Should the deadline permit, Sundowns could be making a statement of intent about recruiting the best talent SA has around the world by getting Matthews to Chloorkop to form part of what is an already formidable side expected to retain the championship.

The Premier Soccer League transfer window slams shut a little bit earlier than usual at midnight today, Friday – so The Brazilians have to move quickly if they are to convince IK Sirius to sell.
