Fans chant evoke nostalgia for Itumeleng Khune

With the fans chanting his name throughout the Carling Black Label clash between the All Star team and Stellenbosch FC, goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune says he quickly became nostalgic.

The Kaizer Chiefs veteran remains suspended by the club for misconduct, which had led to doubts over whether he would feature in the match played at the Peter Mokaba Stadium after supporters voted him in.

Khune, who was also picked as the Man of the Match after his side beat Stellies 2-1, spoke about the gesture.

"It's every player's wish when you are on the field to hear the fans chanting your name. It brings the best out of you and yes, it's been a while but I'm happy that today [Saturday] I managed to hear them because I was doing something that they were loving and they were expecting since they voted for me as one of the goalkeepers to represent the All Star team," Khune said.

The 36-year-old got to lead a group of youngsters and share his wealth of experience with the likes of Mfundo Vilakazi and Jabu Mokone.

It was another flashback moment for Khune, who joined Chiefs aged 12.

"All I can say is, yes I did join a club at the age of 12 but I was developed for five years. I managed to get promoted when I was 17 and I also had to wait for my chance. So, I think opportunities like this where Carling Black Label is offering opportunities to DDC players, I think it's very important that they grab this opportunity because the game was live and everyone was watching," Khune added.

Khune added that seeing the reserve league players make their mark over the weekend reminded him of how far he’s come in his career.

What the future holds remains to be seen.

"Definitely, I also had a dream when I was a youngster, when I was still 17 before I got promoted. The same opportunities that the current DDC players are getting were not there during our days but I had an opportunity as a reserve team player once a month to play against the first team and that's how I managed to impress the coaches and I was also representing national under20 and under23."
