Florian Wirtz injury concern casts shadow over Leverkusen's form

Bayer Leverkusen's star midfielder Florian Wirtz was forced to leave Germany's 1-0 victory over the Netherlands on Monday night at the Allianz Arena due to injury.

The 21-year-old had been a key figure in Die Nationalmannschaft's win, which extended their lead at the top of UEFA Nations League Group A3, but the injury he sustained could spell trouble for Leverkusen's season.

Wirtz limped off at half-time after a challenge in the first half, and German manager Julian Nagelsmann later confirmed a medial ligament concern.

"Flo will get the diagnosis tomorrow. He had a bit of a medial ligament problem and got stuck in the grass. We hope it's nothing serious," Nagelsmann said.

While the injury is less concerning for Germany with no major tournament looming, Leverkusen could face a significant blow.

Wirtz has been central to their struggles this season, contributing six goals and one assist in just ten appearances.

With Die Werkself failing to replicate last season's form, his absence for an extended period would deal a serious setback, particularly as they prepare for a crucial match against second-place Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.

The next few days will be critical as Leverkusen eagerly awaits news on Wirtz's condition, with Xabi Alonso's side looking to get back on track.
