The 21-year-old star has managed only 10 minutes on the pitch in the last three matches, causing concern among fans and management alike.
However, head coach Xabi Alonso offered a glimmer of hope following Leverkusen's commanding 5-0 victory over Bochum on Sunday. Alonso outlined a recovery plan that could see Wirtz back in action this Saturday against Augsburg, just in time for the club's two critical finals: the Europa League showdown with Atalanta on May 22 and the DFB-Pokal final against Kaiserslautern on May 25.
"We have a plan with Flo," Alonso said, as reported by Kicker. "If things go well, he'll take part in training again on Wednesday or Thursday and can play a bit against Augsburg. "It would be good for him to play before the two finals, but it's still too early to say anything definitive."
Alonso emphasized a cautious approach, acknowledging the unpredictability of sports injuries. "I'm not worried, but physiologically anything can happen. There's no reason to be pessimistic at the moment, but we'll wait and see," he added.
Wirtz's potential return is a significant boost for Leverkusen, who are enjoying a stellar 2023-24 season. Already crowned Bundesliga champions under Alonso's unbeaten guidance, Die Werkself are eyeing an unprecedented treble. Wirtz has been a cornerstone of their success, contributing directly to 37 goals in 46 appearances, scoring 18 himself and assisting 19.
His remarkable form has not gone unnoticed, with Real Madrid reportedly making moves to secure his signature for the upcoming season. The Spanish giants are keen to add the young German talent to their roster, recognizing his pivotal role in Leverkusen's triumphs.
As Leverkusen prepare for their upcoming finals, the potential return of Wirtz could be the catalyst they need to complete a historic treble, cementing their dominance in European football this season.
