Former Orlando Pirates man gives impressions on the Betway Premiership so far

Former Jomo Cosmos and Orlando Pirates forward, Eugene Zwane, says he has been impressed by the consistency displayed by the Buccaneers so early in the season.

The Sea Robbers have been performing well since the beginning of the 2024/25 Betway Premiership – with only one defeat in nine matches.

They are currently second on the table, three points behind log leaders and reigning league champions Mamelodi Sundowns, but Pirates have a game in hand. Zwane says it has been an interesting season so far.

"It's been a very interesting season, I mean the consistency we've seen from Orlando Pirates in the league and the serious challenge they're amounting on the championship has made it very, very interesting,” Zwane said.

“It was always gonna be interesting when somebody else or a few other teams challenge Sundowns and we're seeing that coming to fruition this year.”

Zwane has, however, been disappointed by Kaizer Chiefs’ results, saying the hype earlier in the year has not translated into success. Amakhosi are currently ninth on the log standings with three wins from nine games.

"It's a little bit disappointing on the Kaizer Chiefs part because despite all the hype, they haven't really stepped up, there are issues there and I'm not putting pressure on anybody. We can't expect Chiefs to rise within three or four months,” he added.

“So there's a lot of work ahead of them but I think the hype got us carried away to think that things will happen quickly because some of the supporters were even saying they want Man City [Manchester City] and Real Madrid.

“It's been really interesting, Magesi coming in, taking the cup [Carling Knockout] within the first three/four months. It's been kind of interesting but a lot is still yet to come."
