Less than 12 months ago, the club offered the Dutch midfielder a new deal, but it wasn't a pay rise. Instead, it maintained his existing salary, which had soared in recent years due to deferred payments from his last renewal under former president Josep Bartomeu.
Since then, De Jong has remained silent, offering no response to the club's proposal.
Despite his lack of communication, Barcelona have continued to pay De Jong's hefty salary, $18 million this season, plus bonuses, even though he has spent more time on the sidelines due to injury than on the pitch.
However, with the emergence of young talents from Barcelona's academy, the club are in no rush to push for a renewal. Players like Fermin Lopez, Marc Casado and the injured Marc Bernal have stepped up, while established stars like Gavi, Dani Olmo and Pedri have strengthened the midfield.
With this talent pool now in place, the club no longer sees De Jong's presence as essential.
On the pitch, De Jong has struggled to make a significant impact, and this hasn't gone unnoticed. In fact, he was booed by the fans during Barcelona's recent match against Brest.
His lack of form has made it clear to both manager Thomas Flick and supporters that the midfielder must raise his game if he hopes to secure a starting spot.
The injury woes are also a major concern. De Jong has suffered multiple ankle injuries, and he has yet to fully recover. His physical condition remains a question mark, and it's evident that he is not performing at his peak, as seen during Barcelona's match in San Sebastian.
Given these factors, Barcelona are in no hurry to renew De Jong's contract, which runs until the summer of 2026. The club plans to evaluate the situation again next June.
De Jong's salary next season will rise to $19 million, plus a $3 million bonus, a significant amount for a player who is not guaranteed a starting role.
Barcelona could look to sell him, but they might also consider letting him leave for free. One thing is clear, though: there is no immediate urgency to finalise his renewal.
