Frenkie de Jong prioritises fitness with early return to FC Barcelona

Frenkie de Jong is set to rejoin FC Barcelona training after being excused from international duty by Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman.

De Jong, alongside Virgil van Dijk, has left the national team camp ahead of Tuesday's match against Bosnia to avoid overloading their schedules.

The Barcelona midfielder had hinted at his possible absence from the fixture, citing lingering effects from a recent ankle injury.

Speaking about his recovery, De Jong admitted: "I still feel some sensitivity when I play due to the injury. I need more matches and minutes to regain confidence. It's not a risk, but the feeling isn't the same as before."

Acknowledging these concerns, Koeman opted to release De Jong early to prioritise his fitness.

"For both Frenkie and Virgil, it's better to leave the camp at this stage," Koeman explained.

"This decision was made for medical reasons, focusing on the players' best interests."

De Jong will now concentrate on his gradual return to form as he prepares for Barcelona's upcoming La Liga clash against Celta Vigo.

The Dutchman recently made his first start of the season against Real Sociedad but was substituted at half-time as he works towards full match fitness.

Barcelona fans will be eager to see De Jong regain his rhythm, with his midfield presence crucial to the team's aspirations in the weeks ahead.
