Gavin Hunt gives update on striker Abubeker Nassir

SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt has suggested that forward Abubeker Nassir is still some way off from making his debut for the club.

The Ethiopian international officially signed for Matsatsantsa from crosstown rivals Mamelodi Sundowns in October, however, the player is yet to feature with Hunt revealing Nassir only got involved with the group recently.

“He only started training this week – for the first time since he came in August. It was the first training session. You can see there’s quality, he’s got pace, which we need. I would have loved to bring him on [against Richards Bay], but we couldn’t – we can’t take a chance,” the coach explained.

This adds to his frustration following the decision to beef up the attack with Nassir and Samir Nurkovic, another player who remains sidelined due to his work permit only expected to be ready next month.

“You can see that he’s [Nassir] got a lot of quality, much like Samir – another one who will only come in January and make a big difference for us,” Hunt added.

In the meantime, SuperSport have to rely on veteran striker Bradley Grobler to lead the line again despite his own injury woes.

Grobler came off the bench away to Richards Bay to score the winning goal in the dying minutes of the match.

Hunt paid the soon to be 37-year-old a big compliment.

“We can’t keep relying on Bradley, he’s been doing it for…I don’t know how many years. He had a major operation in August after the cup [MTN8] and then he was out. I played him the last two weeks, he looked like he was struggling. I left him out [against Richards Bay] and he came on and scored the winner, I had to tell him something. I think he gave the ball away five times and then his first touch was a goal – that’s Bradley, a fantastic goal scorer and a good servant for SuperSport,” the coach said.
