Gavin Hunt relishing Orlando Pirates test in battle for second spot

The Tshwane giants are currently second with 39 points from 22 matches, followed by Pirates in third place with 34 points from the same number of games.

Kaizer Chiefs are third on the log – level on points with Pirates – and, while Mamelodi Sundowns look to have sealed the championship, the race for CAF interclub football is still wide open.

“The Pirates game is a crucial one looking at where everyone is likely to finish, and winning that game is key for us. We must go into the game with a clear frame of mind, and our approach is key," said Hunt. 

"I am looking forward to the game at the Orlando Stadium, and it is a big test for us. Pirates and Chiefs are behind us on the log table, and we have to look ahead and focus on solidifying the second-place position. 

"Everybody is behind us, and we have to control what we can control. I don’t mind if we get a draw [or] if we do not win the game, as long as we get a positive result. 

"We are playing against a good side, and they have a stronger squad than us. We must plan carefully and play to the best of our ability in this game."

Matsatsantsa a Pitori rested at the weekend while the Buccaneers battled with Motsepe Foundation Championships outfit Venda Football Academy in the Nedbank Cup round of 16, winning 2-1 in extra time at the same venue. 

Hunt added that he would be thrilled to play in Africa next season.

"I have always loved to be in the Champions League space and the last time I reached the semi-final with Chiefs. I think it is where we need to be, but let’s concentrate on the next game against Pirates and see how it goes,” concluded the four-time league-winning coach.
