Granit Xhaka eyes bigger challenges after historic Leverkusen triumph

Xhaka, 31, believed it was the right decision for his career, and his instincts have proved accurate as he played a key role in Leverkusen's historic season, which saw the club win their first-ever Bundesliga title in an unbeaten campaign.

Reflecting on his decision to join Leverkusen, Xhaka remarked to media, "For me, it wasn't a step back, but rather two steps forward. During discussions with the coach [Xabi Alonso] and with Simon [Rolfes, managing director], I felt something special could happen here."

Indeed, something special did happen. Leverkusen not only claimed their maiden Bundesliga title but did so in unprecedented fashion by going unbeaten. Xhaka was a pivotal figure in this success, making 50 appearances across all competitions, only second to Alejandro Grimaldo. Their dominance extended to the DFB-Pokal, where they secured their second-ever cup win.

However, despite their domestic success, Leverkusen fell short in Europe, losing to Atalanta in the UEFA Europa League final. Xhaka acknowledged the challenges ahead but remained optimistic about the future. "The performance was almost perfect last season. Sure, you can win a title one year, but we want more. We're aware we'll lose games, but our goal remains to be at the top," he stated.

With the new Bundesliga season approaching, Xhaka echoed the sentiments of head coach Xabi Alonso, who reminded the squad that last season's achievements were behind them. "What happened is gone. We can't rely on that this year. New season, new competition," Alonso reportedly told the team. Xhaka stressed the importance of continued hard work, urging his teammates to focus on pre-season and upcoming matches.

Leverkusen's preparations for the new season have been boosted by key signings, including Martin Terrier, Aleix García, and Jeanuel Belocian. With these additions, Xhaka believes the team is well-equipped to handle the rigours of Champions League football and maintain their domestic dominance. "We now have the quality in the team for that. With the new players, we can rotate a lot," he said.

Alonso's commitment to Leverkusen has also been a source of confidence for Xhaka and his teammates. Despite interest from other clubs, the Spanish coach opted to stay and continue his project with the Bundesliga champions.

"It shows the character he has. To have these offers and still stay with us shows he believes we can take the next step. We're happy to have him here improving us day by day," Xhaka commented.

The Bundesliga is familiar territory for Xhaka, who made his name at Borussia Monchengladbach before moving to Arsenal. Now back in Germany, he is determined to lead Leverkusen to further success.

Despite the allure of Champions League football, Xhaka emphasized that retaining the Bundesliga title remains the team's priority. "The Champions League is a dream for every player, but the Bundesliga is still the priority. The marathon of the Bundesliga is more important than the Champions League."
