Jose Riveiro’s approach to the crucial second leg against Jwaneng Galaxy

Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has emphasized the importance of boxing smart in the second leg of the second round of the CAF Champions League against Jwaneng Galaxy at Orlando Stadium.

Armed with a 2-0 lead from last weekend's first leg in Gaborone, Riveiro knows that tactically the team will have to be measured on how they tackle their Botswana counterparts.

Reaching the group stages is something Riveiro has been looking forward to, and now 90 minutes away from it, he’s looking to employ tactics that will work for him and the team.

"I mean we have to forget at the moment that we go to the field again, we have an opportunity to play football, to win the match and we know that when we win, we are in the next round, there's no doubt," Riveiro said.

"But again, in front of us, we have a good team, good players, well organised, trying to get a better result than the last time that we faced each other. Probably trying to look for something different in order to try to move the game as soon as possible or not.

"So, we have to concentrate, we have to be focused all the time and understand quickly what's going on, on the field. What the opponent is proposing to us, the questions that we have to answer quickly in the first 15, 20 minutes is gonna be very important.

"Then the emotions, all of those things, we have to be far from that in each and every game. We are Orlando Pirates, we have to play for winning, hopefully with a stadium packed and supporting us all the way."

At face value, the 2-0 lead is a mountain to climb for the visitors, but Riveiro has been in the game long enough to know that anything is possible, and a two-goal lead cannot be relied on.

That's another reason why Riveiro believes the mentality of going for a win is important in this second leg.

"It's a difficult one, when you play for 90 minutes and you 1-0 up in the half-time, you are on your toes but playing 2-0 at half-time can produce a negative feeling of relaxing,” he said.

“Now we are in that scenario, we are gonna play the second round of the preliminary round but trust me we are on our toes. We've had the opportunity to play three times against this team and we know how difficult it is.

“Maybe the 2-0 if you didn't watch the game, makes it feel like it was an easy game for us, 2-0 away from home but it's far from that. We know how difficult it's going to be. We are mentally prepared for a difficult game and that's the way that we are approaching this one."
