JvW: This is SA's best WAFCON team ever

Banyana Banyana stalwart Janine van Wyk has declared that the current team is South Africa's best to ever feature at a Women's Africa Cup of Nations.

Banyana are among the favourites to lift their maiden WAFCON title in Morocco, where they have won two out of two matches so far.

Coach Desire Ellis' charges beat continental powerhouses Nigeria in their opening encounter and have already secured a quarterfinal spot with one game to play in Group C.

But van Wyk, who has been a national team player for the past 17 years and is featuring in her seventh WAFCON, feels this team is the most balanced she's ever seen.

"Most certainly. Every team I played with in this tournament brought something different and, I think looking at this team currently, I've mentioned to the team that it's probably the best team that has been selected for WAFCON," she told the media on Saturday.

"This is looking only at the fact that there are a lot of players are playing abroad and bringing that kind of experience back into the team, and just the great mixture of youth and experience.

"I think it's a great balance and you can see that in terms of our football and the way we carry ourselves - the professionalism within the team, and also the kind of football we display on the field, it says something."

South Africa will face Botswana with the aim of maintaining their perfect record in Morocco as well as secure top spot in the group, for a favourable quarterfinal draw.

The action will be LIVE from 21:30 on SABC 1, SABC Sport on DTT Channel 4, Openview 124, TelkomONE and livestreamed on SABC Sport Digital Platforms.
