Matlou has recently returned back to the fold under coach Nasreddine Nabi having spent the first few months of the season being nursed back to full fitness and has now become a key player.
But the public broadcaster has it on good authority that Chiefs are far off in discussions to hold on to the former Moroka Swallows and Bidvest Wits player, meaning he can agree to a pre-contract elsewhere.
Although there was a slight delay at the end of the previous campaign in deciding whether to trigger the option on Matlou’s existing agreement, the Glamour Boys did eventually activate the clause.
However, that only keeps him on the Chiefs books until 30 June and means the midfielder can leave on a free transfer if there is no offer.
According to information gathered by SABC Sport, the player is keen to continue working with Nabi as the Soweto giants work towards being a force again with the following season one that will define the Tunisian mentor’s tenure.
Chiefs do risk losing the player with their Premier Soccer League rival clubs alerted that Matlou can be signed on a pre-contract and be registered without a transfer fee being paid out from 1 July.
Amakhosi were in the same predicament this time last year with a few senior players, among them defender Sifiso Hlanti and winger Keagan Dolly, whose contracts were expiring.
The duo waiting to hear back from the club and were officially released come 30 June and suddenly had to look for clubs.
Matlou does not want to find himself in the same predicament.
