Keagan Buchanan set to join Cape Town Spurs

SABC Sport can confirm midfielder Keagan Buchanan is set to join recently promoted DStv Premiership side Cape Town Spurs.

The Mother City outfit are expected to announce the free agent as one of their new additions in the coming days and Buchanan brings a wealth of experience to coach Shaun Bartlett’s team.

Buchanan spent the previous season at AmaZulu, where he was bizarrely left out of the core team due to then coach Romain Folz’s insecurities when questioned by senior players over his approach.

Usuthu were battling and facing relegation from the Premier League and Buchanan, alongside key figures like defender Ramahlwe Mphahlele, were sidelined for being vocal and taking leadership.

Folz was later removed from his role and strangely appointed technical director only to quit the post at the end of the 2022/23 season, with Ayanda Dlamini taking over in the remaining seven games.

In total, Buchanan made 23 appearances for AmaZulu and had been restored to the first team by Dlamini to help them successfully escape the drop.

The public broadcaster has now established the 31-year-old is expected to put pen to paper at Spurs in the coming days having joined them for pre-season training under the watchful eye of Bartlett.

Spurs clinched promotion at the end of last month when they finished top of the play-offs ahead of Maritzburg United and Casric Stars – they had done it the hard way after dropping points on the final day of the Motsepe Foundation Championship despite being log leaders in the build-up.

Bartlett has also since been handed a new two-year contract and the Urban Warriors are beefing up the squad in preparation for the topflight – Buchanan will be one of several experienced players like skipper defender Clayton Daniels, right back Nazeer Allie and midfielder Michael Morton.
