This now officially puts an end to recent speculation that the former SA U23 captain was leaving SuperSport United to join Orlando Pirates.
Johannes was unable to see out the remainder of the previous season, having suffered an injury that needed surgery, but returned to training with coach Gavin Hunt’s side before Sundowns could step up their pursuit.
According to information gathered by the public broadcaster, SuperSport had triggered the option on the players’ contract to extend it until June 2026.
It means their Tshwane rivals will pay a sizeable transfer fee to get the deal over the line and hopefully have him join the side now led by Manqoba Mngqithi – alongside Steve Komphela – for their European tour this month.
Furthermore, SABC Sport has established that the discussions are around a cash plus players agreement, with goalkeeper Ricardo Goss and right-back Nyiko Mobbie going in the opposite direction in this transfer window.
Both Goss and Mobbie – two players who were on loan last season at SuperSport and Sekhukhune United respectively, are expected to start training with Matsatsantsa before the end of the week if all goes according to plan.
Johannes, a product of the Ajax Cape Town youth academy, has featured in over 60 games for SuperSport since joining them as a free agent three years ago and then working his way to being a regular in the senior team.
At this stage of the talks, with a medical concluded and a club to club deal approved in principle, what remains is for the player to agree personal terms to seal the deal.
Johannes could very well travel to Austria with his new club.
