Kegan Johannes presents Mamelodi Sundowns selection poser

Mamelodi Sundowns right-back Kegan Johannes is ready to earn his spot in the starting line-up now that his injury woes are behind him.

The Brazilians signed the defender from their Tshwane rivals SuperSport United at the start of the season, but Johannes spent the last few months since then recovering from ankle surgery.

Johannes eventually made his Sundowns debut in the Nedbank Cup Round of 32 in January and got some more minutes in the 4-0 win over Golden Arrows at the weekend, and is now hopeful of growing in stature at the club.

"So far, my stay at the club has been magnificent. I think coming into the team obviously with an injury and stuff, that has been a bit of a mental side that I had to get over," said Johannes.

"But now, seeing that I'm fit and getting back into match fitness and all of that, it obviously takes time and with the bunch of great players we have, we can only get better and I can only grow as an individual and a footballer."

Sundowns return to action against SuperSport tonight and Johannes shares his thoughts as he could potentially get a run against his former club.

"It's obviously a Tshwane derby, so it's always difficult as derbies often are – you don't know what to predict or what can happen, so we're definitely looking at ourselves," he added.

"We're not looking at the log position of the opposition, but it is a Tshwane derby so we have to go in there well prepare because anything can happen in a derby match, we just have to be prepared for everything."
