Khalil Ben Youssef expands on what guides the recruitment process at Kaizer Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs first assistant coach, Khalil Ben Youssef, says recruiting and signing players at the club rests with the board, which is informed by many factors, including the available budget for transfer fees.

Ben Youssef responded to questions at the club’s village in Naturena yesterday, as the club’s fan base continued asking questions about Amakhosi’s activity in the transfer market during this transfer window.

Head coach Nasreddine Nabi has been vocal about the need for Chiefs to bring in more quality to boost their current squad.

But Youssef reveals that Head of Recruitment and Scouting Thembela “Tera” Maliwa and the board guided this process.

"To be honest with you Mr Tera, with the board, with coach Nabi, they have everyday meetings to see different profiles of the players and to discuss. To make a recruitment is not dependant only on ourselves, it's dependant on the budget, it's dependant on the player, it depends on the team that plays with this player. So, there is a lot of thinking inside,” Ben Youssef said.

At the beginning of the season, Chiefs brought in only seven new players, and Gaston Sirino was the only attacker recruited.

In the past, Chiefs have been blamed for signing players who are not at the level of the biggest club in the country, and now Ben Youssef says they follow a rigorous process before recruiting talent.

"It's not easy to make recruitments because we are so strict with these recruitments. We don't do recruitments just to make recruitments, we need a profile, we need specificity of the profile without a model game and we don't have time to make recruitments and we are 100% of all these recruitments," he added.

With Chiefs Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Junior coming out yesterday to assure the Amakhosi fans that they are running around the clock behind the scenes trying to bring in new players in this current window and in the next one at the end of the season.

Ben Youssef says they are concentrating on their current squad until otherwise.

"For us as the technical staff we work with our players, we don't know. To make recruitments it's for the board, if they make recruitment for us, they bring other players then I can answer for you but for us, we stay focused,” he explained.

“We would like to finish the league with our 24 players, we don't think about [whether] they'll be recruitments or not. So, for us, we have to work, we have to do individual sessions for our strikers to improve the quality of our strikers. Then if the board decides to make recruitments, they will bring for us other players."
