Khanyisa Mayo latest: North Africa interest confirmed

SABC Sport has established there’s a strong interest from North Africa to lure striker Khanyisa Mayo away from Cape Town City.

The information on which club has enquired about the Bafana Bafana international is being kept discreet over fears the deal could collapse if the team is named, but talks are understood to be ongoing.

It’s no secret that Mayo has been monitored by rivals abroad for some time now since proving himself to be the goal getter at City under coach Eric Tinkler despite missing out on the Africa Cup of Nations.

He again finished the previous campaign as their top goal scorer with 11 goals from 31 matches across all competitions.

The public broadcaster has also learnt that the Mother City outfit are open to selling with the asking price placed at an upward R30-million in the past, although this figure could be reviewed depending on the terms.

Mayo definitely won’t come cheap after The Citizens confirmed a new long-term contract running until June 2028 that meant interested parties would have to buy the forward out of the club for a hefty fee.

At the time, it was public knowledge that Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates had been keen on the player.

City have always preferred selling Mayo abroad and indications now are that there’s a strong interest from one of the North African giants for his services.

SABC Sport approached the striker’s agent Basia Michaels for comment, but she was coy about any latest offers although she did confirm interest.

“We know that Khanyisa signed a new contract just last year, and that was proof of how much City want to hold on to him. However, that hasn’t stopped big clubs from asking questions about his availability,” Michaels explained.

“Yes, we have a few enquiries. But there is nothing official to mention in the media at this stage, especially with the season starting next weekend.”
