Kylian Mbappe on target again as Real Madrid thump Espanyol

Real Madrid overcame an early deficit to secure a 4-1 victory against Espanyol at the Bernabeu Stadium, narrowing the gap to just one point behind La Liga leaders Barcelona, who face Villarreal on Sunday.

A surprising own goal by Thibaut Courtois in the second half initially gave Espanyol the lead, but Real quickly bounced back with goals from Dani Carvajal, Rodrygo, Vinicius Junior, and a late penalty from Kylian Mbappe.

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti believes his side are steadily improving after their fourth win in a row.

"We started well and reacted well after the 0-1. It was complete. We played better than in other matches; with more rhythm and creating more opportunities. I am happy," said Ancelotti.

"We played faster up front, playing faster and making some better moves. We covered the area well. We didn't have a striker who could set up the position, but we did get in fantastically from the back.

"Mobility, as always, is an important weapon. The third goal was spectacular, on a fantastic counterattack. We had many shots on goal and we should be satisfied. At the back, the recovery was good, as was the pressure after losing the ball. We came out with a good dynamic, little by little we are returning to our best version."

In other La Liga action, Osasuna continued their strong start to the season with a 2-1 win at home against Las Palmas, who remain winless after six matches.

Meanwhile, Real Valladolid played to a 0-0 draw at home against Real Sociedad, leaving both teams without a win in their last five outings while Valencia secured their first victory of the season with a 2-0 win over Girona, lifting them off the bottom of the table.
