Late drama seals Atletico Madrid victory over Sevilla

The visitors fought back from an early setback to claim three vital points, thanks to a stunning last-gasp goal from Pablo Barrios.

Diego Simeone, Atletico's manager, spoke to the media after the match, praising his team's resilience. "This was a massive win for us," he said. "After the international break, we faced Espanyol, who were battling relegation, then Barcelona, a top side where we competed well.

"Against Espanyol, we slipped up with a penalty that didn't go to plan, but here, even though we started poorly, we managed to turn it around. After equalising, we played some great football and kept creating chances until Pablo's beautiful, hard-earned goal arrived right at the end. It brought us all huge joy because we never stopped pushing."

The late strike lifted spirits in the Atletico camp. "This goal shows our work is paying off," Simeone added. "The lads keep going, keep chasing it, and that's what matters."

Reflecting on the title race, Simeone insisted Atletico are focused on their own path. "We've got to think about ourselves, keep improving on last season, and build with the quality players we brought in this summer," he said. "Will it be tough? Of course. Will we stumble? Naturally. But we'll keep at it."

Simeone also highlighted the squad's depth. "Everyone's involved, and that's healthy for the group," he explained. "Today, we got Rodrigo Riquelme back after a long time out, and he did brilliantly. Thomas Lemar came on and helped us too. From there, it's about getting better."

On Riquelme's return, Simeone praised the youngster's patience. "It's about the whole package, mental strength, fitness, and the minutes you're given," he said. "I've got a squad that waits for their chance.

"Look at Axel Witsel, how long has it been since he played? Yet at 35, he's still working hard. We need players who get that."

Simeone, who has fond memories of Sevilla from his playing days, refused to comment on their struggles. "I won't judge something I'm not part of," he said. "I'll always have great memories here. The fans show me so much love, and I'll always look back on this place warmly."

Looking back at the recent international break, Simeone admitted it had been a tense time. "There was uncertainty," he said. "We were just waiting for those who make the big calls to do their job."

The win moves Atletico closer to the La Liga summit, though Simeone's focus remains on steady progress rather than points tallies. For Sevilla, the defeat piles on the pressure as they continue to falter at home.
