Leverkusen's Xabi Alonso hails Frankfurt win as 'perfect' warm-up for Bayern UCL last-16 clash

Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso praised his team's 4-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday as the perfect warm-up for their last-16 encounter with Bayern Munich next week.

Leverkusen was never under threat from Frankfurt after a stunning seven-minute spell in the first half, during which they scored three goals. Aside from a defensive mistake, they maintained full control of the match.

Leverkusen now shifts focus to Wednesday's Champions League first-leg clash against Bayern, who lead them by nine points in the Bundesliga after their 3-1 win over VfB Stuttgart on Friday.

"I'm very happy, very proud," Alonso shared with the media.

"From the outset, we demonstrated complete focus, in every aspect of the game, both with and without the ball."

"A comprehensive performance with an excellent result. The ideal preparation for Wednesday night in the Champions League."

Alonso highlighted the quality of his team's display against a third-placed opponent who had only suffered one home defeat all season.

"I'm especially pleased with the way we played - fast-paced and with great ball control during the first 35 minutes - against a direct rival like Eintracht. They're always tough opponents," he explained.

The manager expressed confidence that his team was ready for the upcoming first leg of the all-German clash, which will be the first time these two teams meet in a major European competition.

"We're prepared for the next challenge - in Munich, against the top team in Germany. We'll see how it goes. We're in great form, and we'll give it everything we've got," Alonso said.

"Are we favorites? We're not naive. We're up against FC Bayern. We must show them the utmost respect," Alonso added, referring to a team that has claimed six European Cups.
