Luka Modric's absence leaves Real Madrid scrambling in Super Cup semi-final

The Croatian midfielder is currently battling a viral infection, and his recovery remains uncertain, according to an official statement from the club.

This is a significant blow for manager Carlo Ancelotti, although Modric might not have started against Mallorca.

However, he has been a regular substitute, often brought on in the second half to add depth and experience to Madrid's play. Ancelotti has said, "Luka's experience is invaluable, especially in crucial matches like this one."

With Modric sidelined, Ancelotti's options in midfield are reduced to Arda Guler, Dani Ceballos, and Brahim Diaz from the first team. The Italian coach has also called up several youth players for the match in Saudi Arabia.

So far in the 2024-25 season, Modric has featured in 19 La Liga matches, starting seven of them, alongside one appearance in the Copa del Rey, six in the Champions League, and one in the UEFA Super Cup.

The match against Mallorca will be pivotal, with both teams vying for a spot in the final. Real Madrid are looking to maintain their momentum after a strong performance in their last La Liga outing, while Mallorca aim to cause an upset.

The kick-off is scheduled for this Thursday, with both teams expected to bring their A-game to the pitch.
