SABC Sport sources have indicated the Brazilians are pushing to get a deal over the line before the start of the 2023/34 season having made the winger a priority target to add to the new faces at the club.
Downs have already announced three arrivals – utility player Lesiba Nku from Marumo Gallants, midfielder Junior Mendieta from Stellenbosch FC as well as striker Lucas Costa, who was recruited from Belgian side SK Beveren.
The interest in Maseko emerged not long following a decision by SuperSport not to entertain an offer from KV Westerlo.
In April, the public broadcaster exclusively reported the Jupiter Pro League club had twice approached Matsatsantsa in an effort to lure the Bafana Bafana international to Europe, but the proposed transfer was rejected.
Westerlo then later revised their bid, making a third and final offer to SuperSport and that too was turned down.
CEO Stan Matthews told SABC Sport at the time the Tshwane outfit had a trial lined-up for Maseko in England.
The player’s agent, Lance Davids of Football First, questioned the logic behind an assessment in Europe when there was an offer on the table only waiting for SuperSport to approve and give the green light.
Since then, there has been no communication from SuperSport publicly on Maseko’s future with Premier Soccer League clubs now returning for pre-season with the new campaign set to get underway in August.
But it’s understood the likelihood Matsatsantsa will sell the player to their rivals has improved now that both parties are advancing in negotiations behind closed doors to try reach a transfer agreement.
