Mamelodi Sundowns and Teboho Mokoena end impasse

SABC Sport can reveal Mamelodi Sundowns and midfielder Teboho Mokoena have finally resolved their impasse over the player’s contract.

The public broadcaster has established the two parties have reached an agreement, with the 2023 PSL Footballer of the Year putting pen to paper on a new long-term deal to keep him at the club beyond June 2026.

Efforts to obtain comment from either party proved unsuccessful at the time of publishing.

Sundowns have been on a mission to secure the services of their best players, especially those who featured for Bafana Bafana at the Africa Cup of Nations, where they earned a bronze medal.

Mokoena was instrumental at the tournament and his representatives had confirmed discussions over a contract extension had already begun long before the 27-year-old joined Bafana in Cote d’Ivoire.

Following his form at the AFCON, it came as no surprise when Mokoena attracted interest from Europe, North Africa, and the Gulf region.

Downs did not entertain any of the offers, given their stance to hold on to their talisman by offering him a new and improved contract.

It’s now understood The Brazilians will soon make an announcement to confirm Mokoena will join goalkeeper Ronwen Williams as one of the players who’ve agreed a long-term deal despite being courted abroad.

Williams committed his future to Downs until June 2028 back in March, and now his teammate, who also joined the Tshwane giants from crosstown rivals SuperSport United, is set to follow in his footsteps.

Indications are that all parties are now satisfied with the terms and conditions and have finally closed the chapter, looking ahead to the 2024/25 campaign, which kicks off next month with the MTN8.
