Although they were already top of the DStv Premiership table and outright favourites to retain the title, Sundowns felt the need to add four more players to their roster for the second half of the season.
It’s the most players signed by any topflight side during the recent transfer window, and Kekana has defended this move by the club, who are hugely spoiled for choice.
"In a football match, you don't know what you're going to get, especially in the second round of the season, so you need a lot of flexibility in terms of your attack," said Kekana.
"I did mention that they know at Mamelodi Sundowns, that there's players who already establish themselves and they know how the team plays.
"You can't always rely on one player, which is Peter Shalulile, to score goals for us, and I think you saw, when Peter is not there, Mamelodi Sundowns is not the Mamelodi Sundowns that we know, especially going forward."
Two of the four in Lorch and Esquivel made their debuts against Orlando Pirates in the 1-1 draw on Saturday night at Loftus Stadium.
Kekana, now an analyst for SABC Sport, believes Sundowns will be vindicated with time.
"To bring players that can play two or three positions will help in terms of attack, and I think we can sit here and think, 'maybe [Sundowns] didn't need them,' but it will be proven in a football match that's still coming," he added.
"So, I think it's for us to sit back and watch how it will unfold."
