Mamelodi Sundowns pushing to sign defender Keanu Cupido

SABC Sport has established that Mamelodi Sundowns are in advanced discussions with Cape Town City to finalise a deal for defender Keanu Cupido.

It’s understood the move is not over the line just yet – a number of details are still outstanding, but the two clubs have been in talks for several days now.

Cupido, who has captained City this season when teammate Thami Mkhize has not been playing, is keen to make the move back to Johannesburg.

According to information gathered by the public broadcaster, the centre back is still contracted to The Citizens for another two years and this means Sundowns and City would then have to agree a club-to-club fee.

The 27-year-old joined City from French Ligue 2 side AC Ajaccio in July 2018 and has become an integral part of the team and a leader.

Sundowns have recently made room for a new defender following the decision to agree to loan out Rushine De Reuck to Maccabi Petah Tikva in the Israeli Premier League for the rest of the season.

The reigning league champions are still waiting for the arrival of Argentina centre back Lucas Suarez as well.

Both deals will need to be concluded by tomorrow night as the January transfer window closes three days earlier than usual.

Cupido to Sundowns appears more pressing, with SABC Sport told the paper work and talks could halt the deal if not finalised soon.
